Feelings check-in for grades 6–8

Use this feelings check-in at the start, middle, or end of class when you want students to pause and reflect. It helps middle schoolers name their emotions and get ready to learn or transition.

Students see a simple screen with a feelings exit ticket, checklist, calming ideas, a timer, and a welcoming background. They answer on their own devices or as a group.

  1. 1Project the template on your classroom screen or whiteboard.
  2. 2Ask students to answer the feelings exit ticket on their device or aloud.

  4. 4Set the visual timer to show how long the check-in will last.
  5. 5Show calming strategies and discuss ways to use them if needed.

Why it works

  • Regular check-ins help students build self-awareness and self-management.
  • Giving time to reflect supports better focus and classroom behavior.
  • Clear steps and visuals make it easier for every student to participate.

Tips

  • Give students a few quiet moments to think before answering.
  • Respect privacy—responses can be anonymous.
  • Talk about strategies for handling tough feelings, not just positive ones.

Make it your own

  • Use after lunch or recess to help students reset.
  • Adapt for advisory or homeroom check-ins.
  • Try in remote or hybrid classes with the exit ticket linked online.

Questions teachers ask

How long should a feelings check-in take?

About 3–5 minutes is enough for most middle school classes. You can adjust the timer based on your schedule.

What if a student shares a strong emotion?

Acknowledge their feeling and offer support. Remind the class that all emotions are valid. Follow up privately if needed.

Can I use this for remote learning?

Yes. Students can respond on their devices from home or in a hybrid setting. The template works on any computer or tablet.
