Station rotation for grades 6–8

Use this template when your students are rotating through different learning stations, such as during a science lab, reading workshop, or project-based lesson. The class sees the current station plan, a timer counting down, their assigned groups, and a checklist of tasks for each stop.

For grades 6–8, this setup helps everyone know what’s next, keeps transitions smooth, and encourages students to keep track of their own progress at each station.

Free for teachers. Your screens, classes and uploads are saved to your account.

How to use it in class

  1. 1Open the template and review the stations for today’s lesson.
  2. 2Project the screen and highlight the current step in the Day Plan.
  3. 3Use the Visual Timer to set time for each station rotation.
  4. 4Run the Group Maker to assign random groups or pairs from your class roster.
  5. 5Have students use the Checklist to track completed tasks at each station.

Why it works

  • Students are more independent when they see the plan and know their group.
  • A visual timer helps everyone manage their time and reduces transition stress.
  • A checklist keeps students on task and accountable at each station.

Tips

  • Give students a one-minute warning before the timer ends.
  • Let groups know which station to start at to avoid crowding.
  • Encourage students to check off each task as they finish.

Make it your own

  • Change the stations to fit any subject (math, ELA, science, social studies).
  • Use with remote or hybrid classes by sharing your screen during online lessons.
  • Adapt tasks and timing for students with special needs or IEPs.

Questions teachers ask

How do I make sure students rotate on time?

Set the Visual Timer for each round and give a verbal warning one minute before the end. The shrinking timer helps students keep track.

Can I change the number of stations or groups?

Yes, you can edit the Day Plan and Group Maker to fit your lesson—add or remove stations and adjust group sizes as needed.

What if a student is absent?

The Group Maker adjusts automatically. You can also manually move students into different groups if needed.
