What is LTI, and which LMSs work with Edform?

LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability) is the standard from 1EdTech that learning management systems use to connect tools like Edform. Edform supports LTI 1.3 with LTI Advantage: teachers add Edform activities to their course with Deep Linking, students and teachers open them with a secure single sign-on, Edform reads the course's student list (Names and Role Provisioning) and sends scores to the LMS gradebook (Assignment and Grade Services). It works with any LMS that supports LTI 1.3. Moodle, Canvas, D2L Brightspace and Sakai can register Edform themselves by pasting one registration URL (Dynamic Registration). Blackboard Learn adds Edform with its Client ID, and Open edX, itslearning, Blackbaud and other LTI 1.3 LMSs are set up on edform.com/lti/setup.

How to use Edform in your LMS

  1. 1

    Your LMS admin registers Edform

In the LMS's external tool (LTI 1.3) settings, the admin pastes Edform's registration URL. Edform registers itself; nothing to copy back.

  2. 2

Add an Edform activity to your course

Where you add external tools to a course, choose Edform, sign in to your Edform account once, and pick a quiz, worksheet, lesson or video lesson.

  3. 3

Students open it from the course

Students click the activity in the course and land in Edform, signed in. When they hand in, their score goes to the gradebook.

Pick an activity without leaving the course

When you add Edform to a course, your Edform library opens inside the LMS. Search, pick an activity and press Add: Edform creates homework for that course and the LMS places the link, with a gradebook column out of 100.

  • Homework only for this course
  • A gradebook column out of 100

Students in, without codes or passwords

The LMS signs students in to Edform. The first time, Edform creates their account and puts them in the course's class; after that they go straight to the activity. Edform also reads the course's student list, so the whole class is there before anyone opens a link.

  • Single sign-on from the LMS
  • Class filled from the course
  • No join codes

Scores in your gradebook

Each student's best score goes to the LMS gradebook as soon as they hand in, and again when you grade open answers. Answers still waiting for your grading are marked as pending, and the full report with every answer stays in Edform.

Everything LTI 1.3 brings

  • Secure single sign-on

LTI 1.3 launches with signed tokens: teachers and students open Edform from the course without another password.

  • Deep Linking

Teachers pick Edform activities from inside the LMS; the LMS places them in the course.

  • Grades (AGS)

Scores go to the LMS gradebook after hand-in and after your grading, retried until the LMS accepts them.

  • Course rosters (NRPS)

Edform reads the course's students, so its class matches the course.

  • Dynamic Registration

LMS admins register Edform by pasting one URL in Moodle, Canvas, Brightspace or Sakai.

  • Your existing account

Teachers who already use Edform connect the LMS to their account and keep their activities.

Frequently asked questions

Which LMSs work with Edform?

Any LMS that supports LTI 1.3. Moodle, Canvas, D2L Brightspace and Sakai register Edform themselves with Dynamic Registration, Blackboard Learn adds it with Edform's Client ID, and Open edX, itslearning, Blackbaud and others are set up on edform.com/lti/setup.

Is the LTI integration free?

Yes. Adding Edform to an LMS, launching activities and sending scores to the gradebook are free for teachers and schools, like every Edform feature.

How does our LMS admin register Edform?

In the LMS's LTI 1.3 or external tool settings, paste https://edform.com/api/lti/register as the tool or registration URL and approve. Our LMS guide has the steps for each LMS.

Do students need an Edform account?

No. Edform creates their account the first time they open an activity from the LMS, and puts them in the course's class.

What goes to the gradebook?

Each student's best score out of 100, sent when they hand in and again when you grade open answers. The answers themselves stay in Edform's report.

What data does Edform get from the LMS?

The person's LMS user id, name, role in the course and, if the LMS shares it, their email, plus the course name and its list of students. Edform writes only scores back to the LMS.

Does Edform support LTI 1.1?

No. 1EdTech has retired LTI 1.1; Edform supports LTI 1.3 with LTI Advantage.
