A spelling test generator saves you from reading the list aloud yourself. Type this week’s spelling words, one per line, and add an example sentence after a | sign if you like. Press Start: the browser’s own voice says the number, the word, the sentence and the word again, while students write on paper. Repeat a word as often as needed, slow the voice down for younger classes, or let it move to the next word by itself. When the last word is done, show the answers on the board so students can check their own spelling, and print a numbered answer sheet for the test. It works as a word dictation in any language your browser has a voice for.
How to use it
- 1Type your spelling words, one per line, with an optional “| example sentence”.
- 2Press Start: each word is read aloud while students write it down.
- 3Show the answers on the board, or print the answer sheet for next time.
Ideas for your classroom
- Give the weekly spelling test without reading the list yourself.
- Run a word dictation in a language lesson with the native voice.
- Let a small group practise their list at a computer while you teach others.
- Check spelling together: show the answers and let students mark their own work.
Turn the list into spelling games
In Edform the same words become games students play on their own devices: guess the word, missing letters, anagrams and a typing race, with every answer checked and saved in your results. Free for teachers.

Is the spelling test generator free? Do I need an account?
It’s free and needs no account. Your word list stays in your browser.
Which voice reads the words?
The voice built into your device and browser. It speaks the language of this page; if your browser has other voices, choose another language in the settings.
Can it read a sentence with each word?
Yes. Write the sentence after a | sign, for example “friend | My friend sits next to me.” The word is said, then the sentence, then the word again.
Can students take the test on their own devices?
This tool is for the whole class at once. To give a spelling test that students type on their own devices and that is graded for you, make a quiz in Edform with free sign-up.
Does it work as a dictation for other languages?
Yes, as long as your browser has a voice for that language. Many phones and computers include voices for dozens of languages.
