A random group generator splits your class into fair, random groups in one click, so you never have to pick teams or watch the same friends always work together. Choose how many groups you need, or how many students per group, and everyone who is present is shuffled into groups whose sizes differ by one student at most. Add private rules such as “never in the same group” or “always together”, then drag names between groups, rename the groups or change their colors. Rotate everyone to the next group, shuffle again, copy the groups into a chat or print them.
How to use it
- 1Paste or choose your class list and mark absent students.
- 2Pick the number of groups or the number of students per group, and add pairing rules if you need them.
- 3Press “Make groups”, then drag names, shuffle again, copy or print.
Ideas for your classroom
- Make partner pairs for peer reading or marking by setting two students per group.
- Form lab or project teams while keeping students who distract each other apart.
- Rotate groups during station work so everyone moves on to the next group.
- Split the class into teams for a review game or quiz.
- Print the groups and leave them in your substitute plan.
Questions teachers ask
Is it free? Do I need an account?
It’s free and needs no account. Class lists are saved only in your browser.
Are the groups always the same size?
As close as possible: group sizes never differ by more than one student.
Can I keep certain students apart?

Can I change the groups by hand?
Yes. Drag a name to another group, or select it and use the arrow keys. You can also rename the groups and change their colors.
Can I leave out students who are absent?
Yes. Tap “Who’s absent?” and mark them — they won’t be put into a group today.
Can I project the groups?
Yes. Press Full screen to show the colored group cards on the board.
