Number line generator — interactive and printable, free

A number line generator makes the exact line you need for today’s lesson. Choose whole numbers with any starting point and step, negative numbers, fractions with 2 to 12 parts in each whole, or decimals in tenths. On the board, tap the line to mark numbers: the jumps between them are drawn as arcs with the difference written above, so adding, subtracting and counting on are easy to see. Hide the numbers to let students find the marked points, then print the line together with four empty practice lines.

How to use it

  1. 1Choose whole numbers, fractions or decimals and set the range.
  2. 2Tap the line to mark numbers and show the jumps between them.
  3. 3Hide the numbers for practice, or print the line with empty practice lines.

Ideas for your classroom

  • Show addition and subtraction as jumps on the number line.
  • Place fractions between 0 and 2 and compare them.
  • Practise negative numbers with temperatures below zero.
  • Print number lines for counting on in steps of 2, 5 or 10.

Questions teachers ask

Is the number line generator free?

You can try it free without an account. After a few uses a free Edform teacher account keeps it unlimited, with no credit card.

Can it show negative numbers?

Yes. Start the line below zero, for example from −10 to 10.

How do fractions work?

Choose Fractions and the number of parts in each whole. Whole numbers get long ticks and the fractions in between are labelled, like 1 1/4.

Can I print number lines?

Yes. The print sheet has your line, with the marks and jumps, plus four lines labelled only at the ends for students to fill in.

Can students answer number line questions on their own devices?

Yes, in Edform: maths quizzes with number and fraction questions play on students’ devices and grade themselves.
