Base ten blocks — virtual place value blocks, free

Virtual base ten blocks let the whole class see place value on the board, without boxes of plastic cubes. Add ones, tens, hundreds and thousands on the place value mat and the number updates as you go. When a place holds ten or more blocks, trade ten of them for one block of the next place, or tap a ten, hundred or thousand to break it into ten smaller blocks: regrouping for addition and subtraction, made visible. Hide the number and ask “What number is this?”, or start a “Show me” challenge and let a student build a random number.

How to use it

  1. 1Choose a mat up to hundreds or thousands.
  2. 2Add and take away blocks, regroup ten for one, or break a block apart.
  3. 3Hide the number or start a “Show me” challenge for practice.

Ideas for your classroom

  • Model 3-digit numbers as hundreds, tens and ones.
  • Show regrouping before written addition and subtraction.
  • Play “Show me 347” with a student at the board.
  • Hide the total and let the class read the blocks.

Questions teachers ask

Are the base ten blocks free?

You can try them free without an account. After a few uses a free Edform teacher account keeps them unlimited, with no credit card.

Can I show regrouping?

Yes. With 10 or more blocks in a place a “Trade 10 for 1” button appears; tapping a larger block breaks it into ten of the place below.

Does it go up to thousands?

Yes. Switch the mat to “Up to thousands” to get thousand cubes as well.

Can I use it with a keyboard?

Yes: Q/A add and remove ones, W/S tens, E/D hundreds, N starts a challenge and H hides the number.

Can students answer place value questions on their own devices?

Yes, in Edform: place value quizzes play as games on students’ own devices, with results for you.
