A classroom noise meter shows students how loud the room is right now, so they can adjust their voices without you saying a word. It listens through your computer’s microphone and shows the level as a bar, bouncing balls or a big face: green when it’s calm, amber when it’s getting louder and red when it’s too loud. Set the “too loud” level and the microphone sensitivity for each activity and, if you like, play a soft sound when it stays loud. It can also count how often the class went over the limit. The sound is analysed in your browser and never recorded or sent.
How to use it
- 1Press “Turn on microphone” and allow access when the browser asks.
- 2Move the slider to set what counts as too loud for this activity.
- 3Choose a bar, bouncing balls or a face, press Full screen and let the class keep it green.
Ideas for your classroom
- Keep group work at a working buzz instead of a roar.
- Make silent reading or a test visibly quiet with a low “too loud” level.
- Set a class goal, such as fewer than three red moments this lesson.
- Pair it with a traffic light or work mode sign that shows the expected voice level.
Questions teachers ask
Is the classroom recorded?
No. The browser only measures the volume, many times a second. No audio is saved or sent anywhere, and the microphone turns off when you leave.
Is the noise meter free? What do I need?
It’s free and needs no account — just a microphone and a recent Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari on a laptop or interactive whiteboard.
Why does it ask for microphone permission?
Browsers always ask before a page can hear the microphone. Edform uses it only to measure the volume level.
It shows red even when it’s quiet. What can I do?
Microphones differ. Drag the slider towards “Less sensitive” until a normal working hum stays green. A microphone near the students, away from the projector fan, also helps.
Can I use an external microphone?
Yes. Choose it in the Microphone list in the settings below the meter.
Can it count how often the class gets too loud?
Yes. Turn on the count and it shows how many times the level went over your limit. Reset it for each lesson.
