Crossword maker for teachers — free and printable
A crossword maker turns a list of words and clues into a ready crossword puzzle, so a vocabulary review takes minutes to prepare. Type each word with its clue — up to 20 per puzzle — and the crossword maker builds a compact, numbered grid with across and down clues, a name and class line for students and a separate answer key page for you. It tries several layouts and keeps the one that fits the most words. Don’t like it? Press “Another version”. Then print it or save it as a PDF. No account needed.
How to use it
- 1Type one word per line, then a dash and the clue.
- 2Check the preview and press “Another version” for a different layout.
- 3Print it or save it as a PDF — the answer key comes on its own page.
Ideas for your classroom
- Review key vocabulary at the end of a science or history unit.
- Practise this week’s spelling words with short definitions as clues.
- Give early finishers a calm puzzle that still practises the lesson.
- Leave a ready puzzle in your substitute folder.
- Let students write the clues, then swap puzzles with a classmate.
Questions teachers ask
Is it free? Do I need an account?
It’s free and needs no account. Your words stay in your browser.
How many words can a crossword have?
From 3 to 20 words, each with a clue. Around 10–15 words make a good one-page puzzle.
Why didn’t some words fit?
A word needs a letter in common with the others to cross them. Add words with shared letters or try another version.
Can I print it without the answers?
Yes. Turn off “Add an answer key page”, or print just the first page.
Does it work in my language?
Yes. Any alphabet works, because the grid is built from the letters of your own words.
Can students solve it on screen?
No. This tool makes printable sheets to solve on paper.
