UNDERSTAND GEOGRAPHICAL AND CULTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MUSIC CORDILLERA, MINDORO, PALAWAN, AND THE VISAYAS In the previous lesson, you have listened and learned about the musical characteristics of Cordillera, Mindoro, Palawan and Visayas, how natives express their feelings towards each other and the environment, their history and their super natural beliefs through the medium of voice. As we continue with our lesson in Music, you are expected to explain further the distinguishing musical characteristics of the songs from Cordillera, Mindoro, Palawan and the Visayas based on its culture and geography. GEOGRAPHICAL AND CULTURAL CHARACTERISTICS: CORDILLERA A Is a region in the Philippines composed of the provinces of Abra, Apayao, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga and Mountain Province, as well as Baguio City, the regional center. The Cordillera Administrative Region encompasses most of the areas within the Cordillera Central mountains of Luzon, the largest mountain range in the country. It is the country’s only land-locked region. The region is a home to numerous indigenous tribes collectively called the Igorot. In the highlands of Luzon, music is related to different occasions such as life cycle events occupational activities and various rituals. Musical performances may be witnessed in the region during the agricultural cycle, peace pacts, courtship, marriage and death rites.

MINDORO The entire island of Mindoro, which is separated from the Southern Luzon mainland, is composed of Occidental Mindoro and Oriental Mindoro. These two provinces are separated by a mountain range, running through the entire length of the island, which serves as a natural and political boundary. Oriental Mindoro North Mangyan group ( Iraya, Tadyawan, Alangan),and South Mangyan group ( Batangan, Buhid, Hanunoo). Similar to Cordillera, the music of Mindoro is used for communication with the spirits in rituals and worships such as; wedding, works, courtships, festive occasions and lullabies. PALAWAN Palawan is an island province in the Philippines located in the Region 4. Its capital is Puerto Princesa City, and it is the largest province in the country in term of land areas. Indigenous Group of Palawan are; • Tagbanwa-( people from Northern and Central of Palawan), • Palawano-(native lowland dwellers in Southern Palawan), • Agutayanen- ( from Central Island of Cuyo and elite among Palawan tribes), • Taaw’t bato- ( means “people of the rock” reside in the mouth of an extinct volcano), • Batak – ( called the “ mountain people of the Palawan” who live in the northeastern part of Palawan) • Cuyonen – ( indigenous group). Palawan music is characterized by imitation of sounds from nature and the environment. It is also highly influenced by the native language of the province.

Lobregat National High School 4 VISAYAS Eastern Visayas encompasses the two large islands of Leyte and Samar, the province of Biliran and several minor islands. The Visayan music is highly Spanish influenced because they colonized the Philippines for a long time. They brought his/her culture and religion from Western practice. Spaniards musicians introduced new styles of music, which has a taste of Western music traditions.
