FIRST READ EXTENSION QUESTIONS House Taken Over 2 Literary Style DIRECTIONS: Complete the following activity as either a written response or a group discussion. _____________________________________________________________________________ RL.9-10.6 Analyze a particular point of view or cultural experience reflected in a work of literature from outside the United States, drawing on a wide reading of world literature. 2. “House Taken Over” represents a literary style—Magical Realism—that is associated with Latin American authors. Magical Realist stories introduce supernatural elements into realistic settings with normal-seeming characters, using an unimpressed narrative tone, or attitude. How does Cortázar use narrative tone and character development to make the supernatural elements in the story seem like normal parts of life? Use these guidelines in your writing or discussion.  Tell how Cortázar achieves the unimpressed narrative tone.  Describe the characters of the narrator and his sister. Explain why they are realistic rather than unusual or fantastical.  Explain how the tone and the characters make the supernatural elements seem like an ordinary part of everyday life. TIP FOR WRITTEN RESPONSE Take notes as you work through the bulleted items. Then, rework your notes into a cohesive essay. TIP FOR DISCUSSION Ask for evidence of one another’s claims or statements. For example, say, “What makes you think so?” or “What evidence can you cite for that?” © by Savvas Learning Company LLC. All Rights Reserved.
