      Let’s Understand



            Context Clues are words in the sentence that help
you figure out the meaning of a difficult word that you do not know
without looking into the dictionary.



1. Context clues may give the meaning (definition) of unfamiliar word.
To get the definition of an unfamiliar word through context clues,
 study how it is used in the sentence. The words before or after an
 unfamiliar word will help you get its meaning.

    Example:
            The janitor in F. Serrano Elem. School labors 8 hours a
       day and went home very tired. The unfamiliar word is labors.

       The context clues are janitor, very tired because these are
       the words that come before and after an unfamiliar word
       that may define the job of a janitor.

  2. Context clues may give examples (exemplifications) of unfamiliar
   word.

   Words before or after an unfamiliar word are examples that will
   help you get its meaning.

    Example:
            My friend in Barangay Don Bosco used to tell me a tale
       about The Lion and the Mouse.

              The unfamiliar word is tale.
              The context clue is The Lion and the Mouse because it is an
              example of a story.


                                   tale means story

                               The Fruit Salad Recipe

    Goal: Use the context clues to understand the meaning of
    unfamiliar words to write your own recipe.

    Role: You are the child who wants to have a fruit salad recipe.

    Audience: Your classmates and teacher

    Situation: Making one’s own recipe using an original recipe as guide.

Product/Performance: Let us pretend that your teacher assigned
you to read a fruit salad recipe. Some of the words are unfamiliar
but there are context clues used for you to understand the words
very well. After reading the steps, you need to write it in your own
sentence to make your own recipe. Be ready to read it aloud in
class.




                         How to Make a Fruit Salad


  Before you start, prepare all the ingredients needed to
  make a fruit salad.
  First, wash all the fruits that you prefer. Select what you
  like either mangoes or        bananas.
  Next, peel the fruits. We do not eat the banana and mango
  peelings.
  Then, slice the fruits into small cubes or pieces. Be careful
  when using the knife.
  Then, combine the fruits together with milk and cream in
  a big bowl. Lastly, chill the salad in the refrigerator. It is
  best to be served cold.
